10 Year Old Program

Welcome to Grade 5!!

Welcome to another year at A.I.S.A.

The Grade 5 team hopes that you had a wonderful summer and that now you are all well rested and ready to start afresh.

Grade 5 is now the year that an Elementary student demonstrates all that they have learnt since they have been participating in the Primary Years Programme.  Last year’s students did an amazing job of displaying their understanding and skills as well as raising an incredible amount of awareness and money for a variety of deserving organizations.  This year, the Grade 5 teachers hope that the students will use last year’s example as both a model, and as a challenge – we would like the students to try and make the Exhibition even better!

This year is also a big year for Grade 5 students as we continue to promote independence which will make their transition to Middle School easier.  We would like families to mirror this independence at home as well.  Of course, if you see your child struggling with something, or if they ask for help, then please help them, but also encourage them to try and problem solve situations on their own, as well as give them greater responsibilities at home.

If you have any questions, or wish to speak to your child’s teacher, then our email addresses are available on the website.  It’s probably easiest to email and make a time to see your child’s teacher, as the beginning and end of the day are always extremely busy and we may not be able to devote the proper time to your concerns if you just drop by.

We look forward to working in partnership with you and your child this year.

The Teachers

Miss Apted

Bronwyn Apted was born in Auckland, New Zealand.  She graduated from the University of Auckland with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education, and also has a Post-graduate Diploma in Primary Teaching.  Bronwyn has taught in schools in New Zealand as well as teaching ESL students in Japan during 2004 and 2005.  She has lived in the United Arab Emirates for the past 3 years, spending one year teaching at a private school in Al Ain, and then the past two years teaching Grade 5 at A.I.S.A.  Bronwyn enjoys teaching at A.I.S.A. because of the international spirit of the school.  She thinks that the students who attend are very lucky to have such a wonderful opportunity to meet other people who come from all over the world.

Ms. Garman

Veronica Garman is a transplant from Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, where she spent four years teaching gifted fifth graders.  She attended the University of New Mexico to obtain her Bachelor of University Studies degree with emphases on Education and Psychology.  Further coursework at the College of Santa Fe provided her teaching license and she returned to UNM to receive her Special Education: Gifted endorsement.

Veronica is not a native New Mexican, however, as her father spent 22 years in the United States Army, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.  This means that the family lived in a wide array of locales, including Italy (where Veronica was born), Germany, Oklahoma, Colorado, Washington, New York, Arizona, Missouri, and Michigan.  Her previous experience living internationally was wonderful and she is very excited to be in Abu Dhabi and here at AISA!

Ms. Dickinson

This is Jennifer Dickinson's fifth year with AISA.  She was born and raised in Miami, Florida, USA.  She went to University in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia, USA and lived and taught for more than twenty years in Atlanta, Georgia.  She began her international teaching in Vienna, Austria and then moved to Abu Dhabi.  She taught the current year's fifth graders in first grade, last year in fourth and is excited to help them finish their elementary careers this year.  She is looking forward spending another year watching them grow and develop.
